THE KEY TO
A LIFE WITH GOD
There’s a lot of talk in Christianity about how we’re supposed to live. But there seems to be a void as to how that life looks in the daylight. Love God, be obedient, do it God’s way are a few of the general ideas we’re told we have to do. Not much more concrete is the admonition to Trust God, claim His promise of whatever. While this is a little more specific and gives us a tenuous starting point, it’s a poor second to a practical method of getting through our days and God given challenges.
I’ve taken bits and pieces of ideas that have been around for a very long time and organized them into a sure way to act in our walk with God. This is the short version. DWIFOY and FOOTS. And the way to put those into practice takes confidence. That confidence can easily come by seeing how God has already been working in our lives. For that, we need only construct a time line. Now, here is the long version.
Someone wrote me in an email and said, “I am still struggling with understanding where the dividing line is between 'Initiating' and 'waiting.' That's been my toughest challenge to find clarity and meaning.
I keep thinking that I should be doing MORE-- but then, I think I'm falling into the INITIATE orbit...I admit, that's been a quandary. Maybe you could shed some insight.”
This person had made the decision to leave a permanent position, but hadn’t yet landed a new job. The time for leaving was just a couple months away. Then, out of the blue, he received a call from someone he hadn’t talked to for seven years. He offered him a partnership in an established firm, on a strict commission-only basis. We’ll get into a lot of detail in a minute, but here’s my answer.
The bottom line is that we end up initiating NOTHING. We let God do all the initiating. We just work on what He's already given us until He brings the next thing. It's the same end as perfect faithing. That would be living your life, that's every second, in 100% trust of God. That equates to 100% obedience, surrender. In that state we don't start stuff, we just work on what He’s already sent us trying to do everything God's way.
Faith, obedience, surrender, and reaction are all in the same box labeled Life with God.
The caveat, of course, is that we can never in this life reach that 100% mark. But, so what? We can never reach 100% of anything as long as we’re human.
I have a long answer for you. You'll find a bit of repetition, but that's good.
You seem to understand the "waiting", the doing what's in front of you. Remember I’ve shortened that down to its acronym. DWIFOY. Do – what’s – in – front – of – you. The second focus is the FOOTS. In a general way, you have already experienced the whole process. Let me take the liberty of reconstructing your life. Whoa! :-)
Let‘s start at a time before the Point of Commitment in the decision making process. So, for whatever reason, you're thinking about leaving. As you weigh in more heavily toward leaving, but haven't yet reached the Point of Commitment, I'm going to assume that you talked it over with God. I'm also going to assume that your belief is strong enough to have talked to God about it a lot.
Jump forward: You decide to leave, Point of Commitment. You take some action toward leaving.
You took that first step and somehow let others know.
Next in the process was you making yourself available. I remember you saying you had some contacts. Making your availability known isn't Initiating, the way I see it. Placing an ad somewhere isn't Initiating. Initiating can be defined as "anything that usurps the receivers control over the intake." The receiving party must have 100% control over the intake. Zero action is required when reading a newspaper ad or listening to the radio. The receiving person has complete control over the intake. He can put the ad down or turn the radio knob.
That’s the Cleanest way to operate, in all forums. It relieves one of Agenda. You've heard me say, All Initiation contains an Agenda. One doesn’t start an action for no reason.
So, there you are, working along toward the Date of leaving, letting it be known that you were going to be available, and giving complete control to those you approached(an assumption on my part).
You're Waiting. You're not scrambling around. And then.....
FOOTS
I think you've heard me talk about this. This is the direct answer to your concern.
You didn't make that call and ask for a job. His phone call Fell Out Of The Sky. FOOTS
End of lesson. All that's needed is daily review.
Can you see the whole process? All you have to do is lock this stuff in your mind and apply it to EVERY decision you make, or maybe better, every decision you want to make.
It will set you free. Literally. Try to imagine going through your days doing your best job on what was in front of you at each moment. You are free of all other focus. Your mind has no need to think about anything outside of what's in front of you. There’s nothing to think about!
In that state, imagine that something happens to interrupt your DWYIFOY, the thing that’s in front of you. This will be a FOOTS, as long as it was unexpected. The pizza guy at the front door may be startling, but it's not unexpected. Once we've determined to the best of our ability that this interruption is truly from God, our next DWIFOY is resolving the FOOTS. I hope you’re keeping up with these two acronyms. Follow up the FOOTS ‘till there's nothing left to do. That will be your Present Waiting. If God doesn't "hit" you with something else, you head back to the previous DWIFOY, fixing that busted chair or whatever.
A funny guy once said the "Life is one-FOOTS-at-a-time." We LIVE, have Real Life, one FOOTS at a time.
Oh, I just remembered one Detector you need to apply to every follow up of a FOOTS. Commitment.
I know you know this. We talk a lot about trusting God's word. We regularly hold Him accountable for the things He's said. Our Trust in God is that He'll keep His word. A good look at faithing will show that faithing and commitment are locked together. We give our word to act when we claim a promise. We give our word to God. All this faithing stuff is really founded in Commitment. Looks to me like claiming a promise isn't the one-way street that we usually think.
Most times claiming a promise is described as though it was some kind of “soft” demand on God to keep His word. And while that's part of it, I've not heard any talk about our end of the bargain. I don't even remember it ever being talked about as a Covenant with God. But that's what it is. Just claiming that promise commits you to the follow up action.
So, no matter how tempting the FOOTS, prior commitment takes first place. Period. Don't treat this too lightly. Don't forget about the dark side. If you're moving toward God, you're probably under surveillance. That’s why we have to judge each FOOTS for its origin. When something falls out of the sky, we have to check to see where it came from. That’s not really that hard. The hard part is getting in the mode where that kicks in. We're so used to making scads of little decisions every day, some important ones get away unattended. Then God has to hit Redo. I have a funny image about that in one of my pieces.
It's like God is a jungle brush cutter cutting a path for a blind Bwana. The poor brush cutter has to keep running back a forth trying to keep up with the Bwana's veering off in a different direction. That’s what God has to put up with in us. He has to keep hitting Redo. Has to set up the next "coincidence."
Just as most major belief systems teach, Christianity’s goal is the elimination of Ego. Now, you probably won’t hear it put that way in most churches, but that’s the result of truly walking with God. But even though one might accept that goal, they will seldom hear the practical method by which to reach a state of no Ego.
The method I’ve assembled is DWIFOY FOOTS.
We need a basis for action and for relief of stress. A time line gives us that which to go on into the “dark” future. It allows us to “see” the future.
In life we will have trials. But as in any learning situation, the trials get tougher until the lesson is learned. The teenager drinks more and more beer until it makes him sick. How many times must he throw up before he stops drinking that much beer?
This is the same gentle method used by God to help us learn to trust Him. Each test of faith is just a little bit harder than the ones before. And what is the goal? Complete, 100% trust on God in every action we do. How is that trust manifested? By obedience to what God has said concerning the action about to be taken.
Any act of trust is an act of obedience, is an act of surrender, is an act outside of Ego. To the degree that we are obedient or surrender, we dispense with an equal amount of Ego. Surrender means doing it some else’s way. The best way out of our jams is to get God to help us do it the Right way.
Here’s a qualification to an old saying, God helps those, who help themselves, to His ways. God’s not going to help you do something your way. If He did, what would that teach you? Selah! What would that teach you?
You’d think that you were as good as God. Think about it. Try to imagine a life where all you had to do was very simply ask God for what ever you wanted, and He gave it to you. After a year of that, or maybe only a couple days, you’d start to feel invincible, do anything you want.
Now, maybe your altruism would dominate for a while, but I guarantee that if you are human like me, there will come a time when your Ego will start to demand niceties for Itself. That’s a nice way of saying you’ll start to take advantage of situations, people and God just to build yourself up.
OK, we will all experience negativity, trials in our life. Trust and be obedient to God, about what He’s already said that applies to our present plight.
Great! Now were right at the place where most preachers start to repeat themselves. And we come away, feeling like we want to do something, but haven’t a clue where to start. We have to do it God’s way.
Homework, just like everything else, is the key. When asked why I believe the Bible, I answer that I’ve proved the supernatural design and execution of the Bible. No sovereign nation on earth could duplicate what lies beyond the printed words we see. I’ve proved too myself that the stuff I can’t prove will also be true.
That proving is what we’re about here. But we’re above the levels of God being real and the Bible being true. We’re at the level that shows God’s control over lives, our own included, as He leads them through the progression of faith actions on the way to losing all their Ego.
How do we “pass through the valley of Baca?” Psalm 84 says, “blessed men pass through...” We’re getting there step by step. We eventually end with the principle/method for implementing this trust in God. Here’s a preview: Do what’s in front of you. But let’s lay some more groundwork.
There are five things we need to remember. They are by no means new. But let’s list them all together in some kind of order.
God knows what’s going on in our lives.
God allows all our hard times.
God will not try us beyond what we are able.
God will provide an escape out of each trial. Therefore,
God deems us able. We mostly don’t think we’ll be able to get through the difficulty. But If God thinks we can, how can we say different?
Now, here’s the same thing from another angle. Some of this different email is a repeat, but I thought I’d include it. Repetition is how we learn.
The question was:
I do have a question if you could help answer for me. The Bible states we can not be His disciple if we do not give up everything and follow Him and to pray without ceasing etc. What does this mean, I must first give up all the things I would like to do, I mean I can not do anything other than pray and seek Him at all times and only do the necessary things in life? Very tough. What do you think?
I can see how one could come to that conclusion. But I think that the extra-Biblical support for that position is greater than the Bible itself. There are a lot of pulpits filled with that stuff every Sunday. I think we have to put those things in proper context. Who was being talked to is important. How many times we are told to do something is also important. Just because Jesus told the rich young ruler to give away all he had, we’re told we have to do the same. Our problem might not be the same as the young man.
We need to focus on the positive, not the negative. It’s not about the negative, what we shouldn’t do or have to give up. If we focus there, we’ll be "white-knuckling” our whole lives. There are scads of people who are busily trying to give up this or that, smoking, drinking, swearing. And they are proud of it, wave it like a flag.
It’s about faithing. That's the positive side. Why fight the battle alone? We’re weak and easy to lead astray by anything that will be more comfortable, safe, cheap or ego building. We need help to get it Right. Practical help. Where do we get that? Yes, from God, but how does that look in the daylight? The Spirit. Paul’s constant message is that we get God’s Spirit when we faithe. On the bottom line then, it says that the Spirit helps us do Right, helps us faithe.
When we’ve surrendered and done it Gods way, in other words, faithed on His word of how something should be done, we have not acted in self-interest. When we are acting in Gods interest, we can’t be acting in self-interest. Only one object of interest, please.
If we only focus on faithing, we don’t have to worry about what to give up. The giving up happens by itself. Folks who have given up drinking may be no closer to God than when they were drunk. And it’s possible to give something up without God’s help. I did it with cigarettes 35 years ago.
Besides finding some solid faith acts, like the ones I mentioned before, you can start trying to recognize when decisions are made. This is very hard and takes a lot of focus. But it’s at this point we can see that of all the options, there is One Right one. And you don’t need someone else to tell you what that is. The information is right in your heart. The hardest, most uncomfortable, financially risky option is usually the Right one.
I’ve also found a way to get the job done without trying to decipher my decisions, just in case I'm not very good at it.
Believers know that God has been working in their lives ever since birth. Everything they have, every talent and possession, was given to them by God. Well, all anyone has to do is look around them for a minute or two and they'll see plenty of things to do. And don't exclude things like painting the bedroom. I bet I could sit in any room in my house and find something that needs doing. That's just in the house. So, it's both the big things and the small ones. Some call it Stewardship. Here's what I've boiled it down to.
Do What’s In Front Of You, DWIFOY (to the best of your ability), while you wait for God to bring you the next thing.
Secondly, that next thing will be something that Falls Out Of The Sky, FOOTS. If you're DWIFOY, you won't spend any time in the past or future or be looking for something to do, so the new thing will be a FOOTS. You get some little lucky break, or someone brings you pertinent information without you mentioning anything. Out of the blue is the old way to say it. Believers will tell you that there are no coincidences. Those things that just show up or coincide are from God. Now we've got a working platform for faithing.
DWIFOY and FOOTS.
The DWIFOY is where the faithing lives. You must stay in the present moment. So, one of God’s promises can be applied to your action. His promise of guidance, or provision will apply to most situations or tasks.
A word about DWIFOY: while working, we have to keep our antenna tuned for a FOOTS. That FOOTS may apply to the present task or to a future one. So, we have to be on the lookout for FOOTS every minute, everywhere, not just while we're painting.
A word about FOOTS: we MUST follow up every FOOTS. We can never just let that “coincidence" slide by without taking any action on it. If for no other reason than to verify that it was from God, we have to resolve it. We might not be working directly on the DWIFOY, but may be at the market or Post Office when someone mentions something that we’re interested in.
In my case, I was looking for work. I had no job for about six months. I told God that whatever He sent I’d say yes. One day at the Post Office I heard someone say the word job. I had my back turned and was several feet away from the counter. But my “antenna” was up. I asked, “Job?”
That was the start of my 15-year janitorial service that gave work to seven other people on about 14 different contracts. When a new opportunity presented itself, I would always say yes. As the workload became too much for me to handle I put out the word that I needed help. I never advertised and I never solicited work. It always came to me.
Cleaning work is very interesting in that the more one works, the more work is presented. People see you working and ask if you’d like to work for them. I received many job offers while I was cleaning up at the Post Office. After a while, businesses hear of your company and call.
OK. So maybe now you have a good idea about the process of DWIFOY and FOOTS. But understanding doesn’t always translate into action. As stated, all action is based in trust. No matter how small or large is the action, we have a “trusting” reason for acting. The more important the action, the more confidence we need to act. DWIFOY and FOOTS doesn’t necessarily equate with confidence.
In the case of a believer, this confidence will be in God. But that’s not as easy as it sounds. I mean, we’re talking about a change in life style, not the purchase of a bag of popcorn. We’re talking about tithing up to 25% of our gross income. We don’t make those Big decisions without some very good foundation.
If God stopped by for a chat and, during the conversation He said that He wanted you to be part of His plans and that you’d have to give back to Him 25% of what He gives you up front, you probably would be able to do it. After all, He was right there, being Real in front of you. We don’t have that privilege, though.
And the Bible is no better at building confidence in God unless we can have confidence in the Bible. In short, we need some way to found our elimination of Ego. We need something to underpin our lifestyle change. What better way than to track God in our lives? As said, every believer knows that God was working in their life long before they opened themselves to God.
I was asked if I had done anything on the idea of gestalt learning. I know very well what it is, I’ve talked about and taught it and. experienced it myself.
There are two types of learning. Big Picture or Little Picture. Some folks say that it’s better to learn all about each detail in the subject and then tie those pieces together later. Other people like the gestalt or field method, which is that you keep doing a broad overview of the subject and occasionally get into more detail on the individual parts. The idea of gestalt learning is that at a certain point the understanding of the whole takes place. Then each part can be detailed out.
By seeing the whole picture, each part takes on more importance by the revelation of its connections to the other parts. I see this being used in literature as a traditional writing technique. I’ve always heard the short version of presentation.
You remember. “Tell them what you’re going to tell them.”
“Tell them.”
“Tell them what you told them.”
That’s the same as gestalt learning. The teacher starts out telling the whole story, fitting small pieces of detail in at each retelling of the gestalt. Pretty soon the light bulb goes on in the students head and he’s eager to reveal the rest of the truth on the subject. Even if it looks like a two year project.
Now, you don’t have to be a teacher to construct your own gestalt. All you need is your homework tools and books on whatever is the subject.
It would be helpful if you outlined the principles of the process, DWIFOY and FOOTS, in a couple lines or less. Then apply them to past events that you're sure about. It'd be like a mini time-line study, taking the individual events on the time line. That exercise will get your mind in the right place and help you see how it works on a practical level. It makes it easier to get into the process the next time a FOOTS appears.
Something that I know I fail in is giving FULL follow up to some of the FOOTS. It's very easy to notice some "lucky break" and laugh and thank God. And then not do any follow up. Sure, some "breaks', like the parking place at the door don't have anything to follow, but there are many above that simple level. The key is to be able to stop and give the FOOTS a calm evaluation. Only takes a minute.
That's why faithing is so hard. We don't recognize or acknowledge a FOOTS properly. A rule of thumb could be that "every FOOTS is an opportunity to faithe." The FOOTS is what we initially faithe on. We're already faithing on our DWIFOY. That's not new; it's in the present.
And I'm noticing that whether the FOOTS is from God or Satan, it's an opportunity to faithe. Our resulting action, either toward God or away from the devil can be hung on a promise. For instance, God's promise of provision can be hung on the act of tithing (that's toward God) or the same promise can be hung on acting as though what the devil is telling you you need will be supplied by God, if you truly need it. Your resulting action will be away from the devil.
Gestalt learning is facilitated by the use of a time line. One can construct a line with individual ticks to indicate significant points on the line. Each tick will have an explanation of what happened at that time. Or it may just be the overview of progression, a story. This might be used in a context well known to all readers/listeners. If everyone present knows the people and events, it won’t be necessary to physically construct a time line. Remember, we’re not principally interested in the individual events. We want to see the progression from easy little trials to big ones and those in between. In other words, the little things that God has done in our lives up to the present things He’s doing. It’s easier to take a chance on God is we see what He’s already done for us.
A time line reveals progression. It gives us the gestalt view of the subject.
A time line is the “forest.” You know, the one we can’t see because of the trees.
A time line based in the Bible shows us three important things.
God’s control, provision and examples of faithing.
God’s control: We can see how He’s acted in the people’s lives to help them overcome the obstacles.
God’s provision: We see how the events evolved and that He is supplying not only the way out of their trouble, but helping them by giving them another lesson. The next jam can be something to thank God for.
Examples of faithing: We can see how the people acted in trust of something God had told them. Remember the 100% trusting God?
A timeline can be constructed on almost every Bible character. As we look, we need to keep part of our focus on the progression of trials allowed by God. Those would be the individual events on the time line.
We can gain some valuable insight by constructing a time line for the Biblical Patriarch Abraham.
In retrospect, we have a pretty good idea of what God was accomplishing with Abraham's life. Once we get a good grasp of the time line concept, we can move back away from Abraham's life to a universal position behind God. From there we can imagine what God might say as He leads Abraham along.
We don't even have to go outside the Bible to understand Abraham's life for God. But just for better understanding of why God would choose Abram to father the nation of Israel, we'll include some things from the book of Jasher; it’s mentioned twice in the Bible.
ABRAHAM'S TIMELINE:
This is just a quick rundown on Abraham’s life, events that would be included in Abraham’s’ time line.
1948-2123 AM = = 175 years
Abram is born to Terah
Nimrod tires to kill him
Terah substitutes another child and hides Abe in a cave for ten years.
Abe leaves the cave to live with Noah and Shem
He comes back home
God tells Abe to leave land and family
Abe stops at Haran, stays there till his dad dies
Abe comes to the Promised Land
Abe gives Lot the best looking land
Famine hits the HL, Abe goes to Egypt
Pharaoh kicks Abe out.
Abe settles in the PL
Ishmael born
Isaac born
Abe told to sacrifice Isaac
Jacob born Abraham dies.
A CLOSER LOOK
Jasher reports that upon Abram's birth, Nimrod, king of Babylon, ordered Terah to bring the baby Abram to him so that he might be killed. Terah substituted another child for Abe and hid Abram in a cave for the next ten years. At this time he was deemed old enough to leave his parents and go live with Noah and Shem for thirty-nine years. This is where Abram learned all the things that he taught the Egyptians years later; math and astronomy among them. This is also where Abram learned the ways of God, and became solid enough in his belief of God to take later the drastic step of leaving his country.
Time to take a close look at the first recorded communication between God and Abram. It is here that we will find the key to interpreting later events in Abram's life.
God said in Genesis 12:1, "leave your country, your relatives, including your immediate family, and go until I show you a place to stop." This was the first real challenge of belief/faith for Abram. Notice how much of this directive was carried out by Abram. He was only thirty-three percent effective. He left Babylon, but not his family. And he stopped where he reasoned to stop. He took his father and his nephew Lot with him. He went to Haran and stopped there.
It took Abram a while, but he did accomplish another third of his assignment. After the death of Terah at Haran, Abram did finally go to the promised Stopping Place. But he still had Lot with Him. He was still hanging on to his family. I wouldn't be surprised if God wasn't behind all the ruckus that Abraham’s and Lot's herdsmen got into over grazing land. This is what finally separated Abram from the last of his family. But this event didn't sink in heart-deep, as we'll see.
Then Abram slid back off that latest third of the accomplishment and fled to Egypt when a famine hit Palestine. He could have stayed and trusted that God would take care of him in spite of the bad conditions. He didn't trust God completely, yet. God had to revise His plan. He had to hit Redo.
Finally, it seemed that Abram was on the right track. He went back to the Promised Land and began his family. At least he judged that he was doing OK. He had heard from God that he would have a son, but God seemed to be dragging His feet and Abraham and Sarah thought to help, I guess. They were looking at circumstance, not God. Since Sarah was well beyond childbearing age, she suggested that Abe have a son by their maid. This was not uncommon in that society. The result was the birth of Ishmael.
Who would have thought that God had other plans? A year before Ishmael's manhood rights, God again foretold Isaac's birth. That's when Sarah laughed. But Abraham was rolling in clover. He had Ishmael and now was to have another son. He was also soon to have another lesson; a lesson that he had failed before. That third of God's directive that said leave your kin. Abraham didn't want to let go of Ishmael. "Oh, that Ishmael be before me always." God said. "No, Send him away."
Now, surely, Abraham had learned his "family" lesson. His father was dead. Lot was not living with Abraham. Ishmael was off to start his own twelve nations of Arabs. Abraham was walking the path God had intended.
Maybe God wanted to drive one last nail in the plan for Abraham. Perhaps He wanted Abraham to finally realize how much he trusted God. Let Abraham see, in no uncertain terms, that he had the capacity for trusting God's word to the point of killing his only son. God knew Abraham’s heart, but maybe Abraham didn’t.
The thing we can know for sure is that although Abraham had a difficult task to perform, he wasn't dragged up the mountain kicking a screaming. Before leaving the two men at the bottom of the hill, Abraham said "we” will go and worship and return. We will return. How could he be sure that Isaac would also return? Because Abraham knew, with his very being, that God keeps His word.
God had promised a great population group would be Abraham's descendents. He promised Abe that a "company of nations" would come out of his loins. That's a world empire. All these people would come through Isaac. Abraham knew by this time that God would keep His promise of many descendents. Paul provides us confirmation when he says that Abraham knew that if he had gone through with the killing that God would have raised Isaac from the dead. He would have to in order to keep His word.
The neat thing is that we can follow the events of Abraham's life, watching God interact with Abraham, finally, bringing him to the point of complete fulfillment of God's directive. And what was the purpose of that directive? To teach Abraham 100% dependence on God; 100% relinquishment of Ego.
This is God's purpose for every one of us. If God is in our lives, He's there teaching us to trust Him. Faithing is what I call it. Paradoxically, this complete dependence looks, to the world around us, like complete independence; the ability to stand alone.
But from God's side of the picture, Abraham's purpose was to produce a great world-population group that would spread the word of God's coming kingdom on the earth. God's overall objective for earth is to have it be His Throne. I even believe that "dressing" God's unfinished, created earth was one of Lucifer's tasks. When he flunked out, God created Adam (read that "human being") and told him to "tend the earth." Unfortunately, Adam failed also. At the end of the Millennium, God will step in and finish the remake and set up His Kingdom. That's what Revelation talks about when it mentions the "new heaven and new earth."
You want to prove God in your life? Do a time line on yourself. You can start back as far as you want, but I think five years is plenty. Even if you became a believer last month, you’ll have to admit that God has been involved in your life a lot longer than that. That means that the last five years will still show how God lined events up to lead you to the place where you became a believer, and to the present day. The Bible says that believers were “called” before the creation of the world.
Your time line will be simply the events of the last five years that stand out in your memory. You don’t have to worry about the order; just them put down on the paper where they belong. Later you will find that other significant memories will be inserted in your ongoing timeline. You don’t have to do this all in one night.
When we get a look at the big picture of our past, we can easily see where we are headed, if only generally. What’s better than “knowing” the future, is knowing that God has helped us through that past and will certainly be there to help us with the next event that tries our belief and surrender.
It’s realizing that God has lined up the thing that’s in front of you, your DWIFOY, and doing your best to accomplish the task the way you think God would accomplish it. God wouldn’t cut corners.
WRAP: 1-The key to a Righteous walk with God is DWIFOY and FOOTS. You do your best on what God has already given you, while you wait for Him to drop something new out of the sky on you.
